Nike goes barefoot running with Apple

Nike is one of the biggest sporting brands in the world, renowned for its innovative yet practical and effective sportswear.
Securing the services and support of some of the world’s biggest sporting superstars such as Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods and Roger Federer has only helped reinforce the brand’s global influence and industry dominance. At Nike, innovative design and unique styling is everything, company spokesman Ryan Greenwood: “We are tireless in our pursuit of innovation.
At Nike, we constantly challenge ourselves to think the ideas nobody else thinks of ideas nobody else thinks of, to create products and services nobody else creates, or to improve things that already exist.”
Pioneers of innovative footwear
For decades, Nike has pioneered a range of footwear solutions to suit every athlete and training style.
In 1972, the company’s founder, Bill Bowerman created the legendary ‘waffle’ outsoles, which had waffle-type nubs for traction. These were much lighter than those of traditional training shoes. In 1979, they launched Nike Air cushioning technology, and in the late 1980s, Nike unveiled the world’s first ever cross-training shoe.
Whilst Nike Shox offered a revolutionary cushioning and support system, NikeID allowed consumers to design footwear and apparel to their preferred design and performance requirements. The shoemaker also made the Flywire.
“This is a revolutionary upper technology,” Greenwood points out. “It features high-strength threads that work like cables on a suspension bridge with support engineered precisely where a foot needs it, allowing Nike to make its lightest and strongest footwear ever.”
Today, the company remains at the forefront of technology as it continues to go from strength to strength with its vast offering of innovative sports shoes. There are also a number of trends that the company is currently tracking.
Nike meets Apple
In pursuit of its goal of working with the best, in 2006, the company teamed up with technology giant Apple to offer runners a unique training and motivational experience in the form of Nike+.
Manufacturing Magazine
Athletes can now run with Nike+ ready footwear, an iPod Nano or Touch and the Nike+ iPod sport kit, which contains a sensor and receiver. This sensor is the first step in connecting to the experience. It slips unobtrusively into a pocket under the left sock-liner of the Nike+ ready shoe.
“Together with the receiver, the in-shoe sensor uses patented technology to measure the length of time the foot is on the ground, not impact like some pedometers, and translates and records the data into the receiver,” says Greenwood.
In fact, the iPod Nano tracks the progress of the workout and provides real-time feedback directly through the earphones.
“Nike+ is innovative in a number of ways,” Greenwood adds. “We have not only created an innovative digital training tool, we have created the world’s largest  community of runners at www.nikeplus.com, which has more than three million members.”
Since the launch of Nike+, a variety of Nike+ enabled devices have been introduced to help comrunners reach their full potential. The technology is compatible with cardiovascular machines and the Nike+ Heart Rate Monitor. There is also a new Nike+ GPS App for use with the iPhone.

J&D Produce recall cilantro and parsley

Cilantro Leaves

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning the public not to consume certain Little Bear brand fresh greens because of possible Salmonella contamination.
J&D Produce has recalled nearly 7,000 cases of cilantro and curly parsley after samples in Quebec, Canada, and Michigan tested positive for salmonella.
The recall pertains to cilantro and parsley from J&D Produce packed between November 30 and December 6.
Cilantro and parsley processed and branded as Little Bear between those dates can be taken to retailers for a full refund.
Parsley Leaves
The recall involves 2,498 cases of the parsley -- which have expiration dates 12 days after being packed -- that went out to the Canadian provinces of Quebec and Ontario and the U.S. states of Connecticut, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Washington and Wisconsin.
The 4,411 recalled cases of cilantro, carrying the same packing and expiration dates, were distributed in Colorado, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Washington and Wisconsin as well as Quebec and Ontario
After the positive results, regulators and health officials in the United States and Canada have stepped up inspections of J&D Produce's facilities. They also undertook other measures, including stopping and sanitizing all production lines, adding manual inspections, rinsing products more and bringing in consultants.
In addition to cilantro and parsley, the Texas company gathers, packs and distributes a variety of fruits and vegetables such as carrots, limes, eggplants, peppers, greens, onions, melons, mangos and asparagus, according to its website.

Russian launches European internet satellite

A satellite dedicated to delivering broadband internet to Europe has been launched successfully from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on Monday. The six-tonne Ka-Sat is the second satellite of its kind to be launched in Europe.
The Eutelsat operated satellite will provide services to millions of homes across Europe in so-called "not-spots", where consumers are not able to receive stable internet connections. Ka-Sat will provide the continent with 80 spot beams which produce signals that cover an area of a few hundred kilometres across. Spot beams allow for frequencies to be reused effective in multiple regions without interference.
Michel de Rosen, Eutelsat CEO said "As many as 30 million households in Europe are not served at all or get high mediocrity of service. These could be people in the countryside or in the mountains, sometimes not very far from large cities. Ka-Sat is an answer to that problem".
Paris-based Eutelsat is one of three Fixed Satellite Services (FSS) companies currently operating worldwide. They also transmit thousands of TV channels across its spacecraft fleet.
This latest satellite follows the Hylas-1, operated by Avanti Communications of London, which provides eight regional spot beams to the UK, Ireland, Spain, Portugal and Eastern Europe. Ka-Sat is considerably larger than its competitor, with a notional capacity that can serve up to two million households compared with Hylas's 300,000.

Audi set to invest $15.3 billion in expansion programme

German luxury car manufacturer, Audi is planning to invest R102 billion in new products and technologies, between 2011 and 2015.
Around 80 percent of all investment will go to developing new products and to technologies of the future such as electric and hybrid drive systems. One example is the Audi R8 e-tron, the first electric sports car from Audi, which the company wants to begin selling in late 2012.
In the biggest investment of its history, Audi will also be upgrading its Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm sites. Audi is set to release a range of cars in 2011, including the new Audi A6 and the Audi Q5 Hybrid, the first full hybrid from the carmaker. In launching the new Audi Q3, Audi is also occupying the midsize premium SUV segment for the first time.
Audi AG board member Axel Strotbek said: "With this (R102-billion) investment, we are laying the foundation for sustained, profitable growth, and supporting our claim to leadership in the premium car segment."
Audi will not only invest money in its future, but also additional manpower. The automaker giant is looking to hire around 1,200 experts in 2011.
Another board member, Thomas Sigi, said: “Innovation requires people. For this reason, we want to hire around 1,200 experts in 2011 who will primarily bolster our electromobility and lightweight construction fields of competence, as well as the implementation of our growth strategy.”

A firm that makes hardcore interactive pornography has hacked Microsoft’s innovative Kinect controller to create a game, which lets players choose avatars for themselves and then select scenes and partners to act out their fantasies.
This week Thrixxx posted a YouTube video featuring a graphic demo of its 3DSexvilla adult game in action.
This video became an internet viral before it was removed from the website.
The video showed how players can use their hands to directly ‘interact’ with scantily-clad female characters on screen who squirm around in apparent ecstasy. ThriXXX intends to have controllable male characters in the finished game.
Brad Abram, vice president of business development for thriXXX, said: “It became another avenue for us to explore the game.
“We didn't know where this was going to go but publicity...
